A MAN OF SOLIDITY | PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY

President Young-Sam Kim was the president of the Republic of Korea in the 1990s. To commemorate his achievement of enhancing democracy of the Republic of Korea, the presidential library project was initiated in 2011. After several months of competition schedule, our design proposal was chosen, and the library had been realized in 2018 in Seoul.

A major goal of this project was to build a space that commemorates the president Kim’s pursuit of democracy. To bring his pure and solid ideology into space, skylight window was utilized. When the sunlight from the sky penetrates a core of the space, the public may experience his belief in the light of democracy. The cube-shaped building mass represents president Kim’s solid image; the cube mass is floated from the ground to highlight its image of integrity.

As a student internship, I was involved in this project from the beginning to the end. Besides making a number of study models, I participated in a regular meeting to develop the schematic design.

This project was developed with financial support from the Kim Young Sam center for democracy.
