INTEGRATED DESIGN PROCESS

Different from the conventional design approach, the IDP model asks all project members to put most of their effort on the project’s first half than the second half. This means, they consider and discuss most aspects of design more comprehensively in the early design stages. By doing so, the sustainable aspect of the project can be considered significantly more, and this can lead to a better performance of the project.

For this model development, our lab conducted numerous literature reviews and surveys to reflect the demand from the practitioners in the real field. The research also included reviewing the real design and construction processes of the green buildings in Korea. We also studied possible design phases in order to propose an ideal guideline. The final IDP Model that we developed is composed of three layers. Each layer describes what to do, how to do, and who needs to do in each design phase.

After developing the model, our team at Yonsei University had an opportunity to design an office building applying this Integrative Design Process model. I worked on this project as an IDP facilitator and a technical consultant and was in charge of supervising the whole design process. This building is the very first high-performance office building in South Korea built with Integrative Design Approach.

The Integrated Design Process model was developed with financial support from the Funded by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport of Korean Government.
