Casa-Sol is an energy simulation tool that is easy for students and designers to use. We have been developing this tool over the past two years with the Python programming language. This tool helps the users to easily evaluate the building energy performance and the human comfort factors in their design, by entering brief information such as building geometry and floor area. It also helps the users decide the passive design elements such as building orientation, the design of openings, and also the types of active systems by evaluating the energy demand.

Dr. Junhans and I have been using this tool in teaching as well, and let students use this tool in classes. With this tool, students can quickly apply the knowledge in sustainable design which they learned in class. In the process of evaluating the sustainability of their design, students can easily grasp the fundamentals of the environmental system and understand their relationship with design decisions.
