The City Shelf refers to city + bookshelf. The library symbolizes the Seoul city’s street scale and each mass represents city shelf’s ‘book’. Samchung-Dong is the place where the tradition and the future coexist. A number of traditional Korean style houses are located along the road making many different kinds of alleys which looks similar to the connection of capillaries and arteries. It also represents Korea. Alleys, the tradition, the future, and the library communicate with people who love to read books in a calm, honest, non-radical and non-conservative attitude.

The library is the place where people read books, but people do not go to the library only to read books. They want to find a good place with a good atmosphere. The library would become a special place preparing places, similar to Samchung-Dong, to read, think, chat and study. This project suggests a special and symbolic space making people come back again.
